Swamp Coolers

Swamp coolers, or evaporative cooling systems, are very effective in cooling homes in dry climates.   The systems circulate the air through a wet pad of material designed to cool the air before it is blown into the house. These units work well, however, they require regular maintenance to ensure proper operation.


Maintenance includes cleaning and replacing the pads, along with routine cleaning of the inside of the unit. We recommend cleaning the pads in a swamp cooler every  1-2 months.


Due to the potential for mold growth, we also recommend using a biocide on the pads. Biocides are available at most hardware stores and come in different forms including liquids or sprays. We also suggest washing the inside of your swamp cooler with soap and water as needed to remove any mold buildup that could be potentially harmful to your health.

Beginning of Spring evaporative cooler maintenance
